INA, Ill. – “The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive” has awakened a lesson in giving for students at the Rend Lake College Foundation Children’s Center.

Forty children at the center recently generated 50 pairs of pajamas for the drive, which is Scholastic Book Club’s current partnership with The Pajama Program. The pajamas donated will be coupled with 20,000 books from the Scholastic Book Club and given to children in need at places like group homes, shelters, foster care and orphanages. The goal of “The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive” is to provide brand-new pajamas and books to 20,000 children across the U.S.

Michelle Allen, director of the RLCF Children’s Center, said this program is a great way to teach children valuable lessons while having fun.

“I would guess that most of the children were with their parents when they bought the pajamas, so they probably had a chance to pick them out, which is fun for them,” she said. “By dropping the pajamas off at our front door, they are at the center of giving to others ... helping those in need. Learning in class that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, something going on in classrooms across America, really enriches that experience.”

In a statement released by the Scholastic Book Club, Pajama Program Executive Director Genevieve Piturro stated, “Many of these youngsters have been abused or abandoned and in many cases, have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a loving mother or father tuck them in at bedtime. Through the Pajama Program, we hope to contribute to a warmer, more loving environment for children when they are at their most vulnerable.”

The pajamas were boxed up and shipped out from the RLC campus in Ina last week. Who knows where they might be now? “The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive” can be tracked online at www.scholastic.com/pjdrive.
