INA, Ill. (April 18, 2018 ) - The Rend Lake College Foundation Children’s Center blew off some STEAM last week, celebrating the 2019 Week of the Young Child, an annual celebration hosted by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) to spotlight early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities.
The theme for this year’s event was STEAM, an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics for guiding inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. But, more than anything, it was a chance for everyone to have fun while learning about the world around them.
“Week of the Young Child is a great opportunity to celebrate our youngest learners and their families. We love when children get excited about learning. This week gives us an opportunity to dig deeper into science, technology, engineering, art, and math. These areas promote young learners to think critically, be creative, increase problem-solving skills, and have meaningful collaboration. Most of all it celebrates having fun while learning,” said Children’s Center Director Brooke May.
In addition to the learning activities, the Children’s Center also held a silent auction during this week to raise money for updated security cameras throughout the center and for an internal communication system that would allow the director to notify classrooms at once if an emergency were to occur. Donations were provided by classroom teachers, RLC campus departments, and generous community vendors.
Parents and staff were able to bid on the baskets throughout the week and the silent auction was closed on Friday. The silent auction raised $717.00 and all proceeds will go straight to the Children’s Center for updated security features.
The Children’s Center currently has open-enrollment for the summer and fall semester. During the summer semester, the center offers child care for children six weeks to 13 years old.
