Trips & Tours

Bones, Beer Baron, & the Blue Owl

Enjoy a unique day exploring St. Louis and Kimmswick!

Learn More

We begin with a visit to the Anheuser Estate, ancestral home of Fred and Mabel Ruth Anheuser. Fred’s great grandfather, Eberhard Anheuser, was the founder of E. Anheuser Brewing Company, the brewery that later became known as Anheuser Busch, producer of the world famous Budweiser Beer. After the Anheuser Estate tour, we will enjoy lunch at The Blue Owl restaurant. The Blue Owl has been featured on the food channel four times. Mary’s mile high levee pie was chosen as one of Oprah’s favorite things for her Christmas list a few years back. No one is disappointed with the food and especially not the dessert. You may even want to take home some of their famous apple butter. We will step back in time with a visit to Mastodon State Historic Site after lunch. The park contains an important archaeological and paleontological site – the Kimmswick Bone Bed. Here, scientists discovered the first solid evidence of the coexistence of humans and the American mastodon in eastern North America. Enjoy a brief film highlighting the park, a private ranger talk, and time to explore the museum which includes an impressive mastodon skeleton. Tour fees, lunch, gratuities, and charter bus transportation are included.

You must pre-register by March 27th.

Gardens of St. Louis

Explore a few of the beautiful botanical gardens in St. Louis during this exciting day trip.

Learn More

St. Louis is home to one of the top 3 Botanical Gardens in the country. On this trip, we will visit the Missouri Botanical Gardens, home to the world’s first climatron building and at the forefront of plant holdings and biological research. You’ll enjoy a private tram ride through the Garden and take in the spring colors in bloom. You’ll also receive a gift card for lunch at Sassafras Café and have time to visit the amazing gift shop. After lunch we will head to Bowood Farms. Originally located in Clarksville, MO, this perennial grower expanded its reach into the St. Louis market and opened in the Central West End in a decaying warehouse. The visionaries at Bowood Farms saw the makings of a natural greenhouse-style facility and began the rehab in January 2005. Today, the Bowood team continually seeks out the best plant vendors to complement their offerings so there is always something in bloom no matter the time of year. Later that afternoon we will visit one of the newest public gardens in St. Louis, The Heman Park Bird Habitat Garden. The St. Louis region is on the great Mississippi migratory bird flyway. In addition to beautifying the area by utilizing native plants, the new garden will provide food and habitat for both local and migratory birds. Tour fees, lunch,  gratuities, and charter bus transportation are included.

You must pre-register by April 10th.

General Information

Cancellation of Classes

Nothing kills a good program faster than waiting until the last minute to register. At some point we have to determine if enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Rend Lake College is a non-profit organization. We try to break-even on classes, at the same time we try to pay our instructors a fair wage for their time. If you are considering taking a class or you wish to show up the first night of class to register, please call and let us know. Otherwise, we must cancel low enrollment classes.

Students in Community Education classes may withdraw and receive a full refund by contacting a Rend Lake College Community Education representative at least 5 business days in advance of the first class or 10 business days in advance of a trip. No refunds will be given after that time, but a registration certificate will be issued in your name and MUST be used the following semester. No refunds or certificates will be issued following the first class session. Please call us if you must cancel a class at 437-5321, x 1714 or (800) 369- 5321, x 1714.

Course Content

Course content may be altered at the discretion of the instructor(s), and may in some instances deviate from the catalog description. We try to be as accurate as possible in describing our classes, but we allow the instructor to teach what they feel is important.

Senior Citizens

In-district residents who are 60 years of age or older qualify as senior citizens for tuition purposes and are entitled to take college credit courses provided that class has the required number of tuition paying students enrolled and that the classroom has available space tuition-free. The college reserves the right to use the qualifying age for senior citizen waivers, as dictated by State statute, which is 65 years of age or older for specific programs and departments. This does not include applicable fees charged for credit classes, nor does it include Community Education (COMED or ILR ) classes . Senior citizens may be charged a fee of $50 or more for repeating classes more times than credit can be claimed.

We get many calls from individuals outside of the Rend Lake College District regarding out-of-district fees. With Community Education classes, there is no need to worry about being out-of-district. It does not affect your fees nor your attendance. We encourage any one who has an interest in our classes to attend.
